A Soul Sketch of Douglas by Lincoln Ure

August 1st, 2008, Celebration of Life Service at Camp Tuttle, Big Cottonwood Canyon

There are two kinds of people, those in recovery, and those who have not begun yet.

Attractions and Addiction not our fault, but they become our work.

Doug’s parents modeled recovery. Father modeled years of sobriety with alcohol. Mom recovery from caretaking addicts.

Doug’s recovery was in process, began early, tragic set back.

To begin he lived in his body. He was a doer.

Full of adventure and zest for life. Not afraid to do anything, loved camping in Capitol Reef, The Grey’s River, BlacksFork, Snowboarding.

Mowed the lawn when it was almost bigger than he was.

Hockey

Second degree black belt in Tae Kwon Do

Guitar

Bass Sax

Construction work with his Uncle James

Peacemaker

Gentle Soul

Everyone liked him or so he thought.

Started wearing dad’s cologne in the 3rd grade.

Devoted to quest for internal and external peace for himself and others.

Douglas was a spiritual seeker who had a great yearning for connection with the cosmos as well as other people.

He worked to maintain peace of mind just as he worked to establish peace and harmony in the world he lived in.

Grounded in the physical world and in his body.

Struggles, tremendous perusal magnetism or retreat and withdraw.

Thoroughly imaginative, inspiring others with healing and vision for life.

The Native Americans say, “Every human and animal is born with a certain number of days to their circle. Some lives are long and others are short but each one is complete.”

**Douglas’ tender day is approaching next week. The portal is felt, and is honored. How I move with it is to imagine Douglas now. Becoming a heart with ears as he was and continues to BE. A massive superpower he entered into this world with.

I discovered on a sheet of paper in Linc’s signature handwriting the above which he penned. Weaving the threads together as he spoke about him at his Celebration of Life service. Held at Camp Tuttle in Big Cottonwood Canyon in Utah. It was where Douglas and his sister enjoyed summer camp. We had to wait two weeks to gather before it became available between sessions of campers.

A holy and sacred moment was felt within the rustic chapel surrounded by green pine and bird song. Douglas is who informed me where to have it as I was clueless. I kept asking him what he wanted? Arriving in lightening bolt fashion early one morning while standing amidst a sea of color, within my beloved wild flowers in my garden.

I heard Camp Tuttle.

Unsure if we could make it happen, yet it came together effortlessly, and was where we were meant to be.

In his memory and honor please intentionally pause to listen, reach out to an old friend or make a new one, share something you notice about another, and when possible offer back breaking hugs. He adored hearing our bones pop as he wrapped his arms around us. That’s our son, a Holy Popper.

I imagine it might be the first hug many receive as they begin their adventure in the next place.

Oh dear Joanie…what a beautiful tribute for your boy. Everytime you speak of him, feels like I know him so much better. “Where you were meant to be”….touched me. The outdoors surrounded by nature…where years of summer camp led him to be in and care for all things in nature. This is you being vulnerable and open…your heart overflowing.. thank you so much for trusting us with all you went through and how you move onward with him by your side. I will think of you and reach out, hug as many as I can and make new friends on the 13th…that number matters to me💜

Sending you love and strength and peace as Douglas’s tender day draws near.

Keeping…
