My deepest gratitude to each of you who land here. Your presence means the world to me, because it encourages me to continue to share in real time what is coming into my heart, and desires more exploration on the page. My heartfelt thanks.
This is the summer season, where in the past I’ve taken several weeks off from my writing. I’m so hardwired as an educator, that to be able to pause for a bit feels just right. I am still throughout the summer meeting with my clients, so if it resonates please reach my way. I would be deeply honored to connect with you.
Perhaps try using the website as an oracle deck, and asking to be lead to what may speak to you in this now moment. I practice this and often am totally blown away with where I’m lead.
Rest is revolutionary, and it is a privilege, I know. There were times in my life, where I would have thought anyone speaking to me like this was so out of touch, clueless perhaps. Even in the midst of the hustle, the busiest times of one’s life, I hope that small moments may be carved out. Time for a deep breath, a pause, some beauty in nature, silence, whatever feels nourishing. Please take its hand, allow it to take yours, and lean in.
I remember giving my children a brush, and asking them to use it on my hair. They would stand on the couch behind me, as I closed my eyes, and for as long as I could bribe them, I totally blitzed out on their tiny hands moving those bristles through my long, dark hair. This shows how simple a pleasure can be when one is in the midst of a life that requires every speck of us.
“You were not just born to center your entire existence on work and labor. You were born to heal, to grow, to be of service to yourself and community, to practice, to experiment, to create, to have space, to dream, and to connect.”
― Tricia Hersey, Rest Is Resistance: A Manifesto
Here’s to being an active participant in this revolution of rest, however and whenever we can. Loving and gentle care to each of you. I’m giving you your permission slip if you require one, and best of all it doesn’t have an expiration date!

Love the rest dear Joanie, and the Degas painting. I've never seen that one. Love the Hersey quote and thank you for the permission slip. Coming to your website is like laying in a field, arms and legs spread so the sun can heal and rejuvenate with you words. Love the picture in my head of the tiny hands giving you a relaxing rest. My granddaughter used to play with my hair too. Much love to you.
Rest is an action and revolutionary in modern culture that worships productivity. I usually don't realise how exhausted I am until I have space to rest. Ideally in nature xx
I love that you wrote this and that you published this now. I have Tricia Hersey's book on my shelf as well - I was introduced to her book last year at a conference and immediately felt a kinship with her words. On page 33 she says, "Resting is a connection and a path back to our true nature. We are stripped down to who we really were before the terror of capitalism and white supremacy. We say no to the systems that see us as simply machines. We resist the lie that we aren't enough. We are enough! We are divine."
After a rough year and a few months in my new place and my new job, I feel…
