You

Summer of 1983. Brandi and I are eagerly awaiting our first 'date' with you.
Summer of 1983. Brandi and I are eagerly awaiting our first 'date' with you.

You

A beat in my heart

No one else can fill your spot

As it was made just for you

You

Are the one

Who keeps the lights on

And flicks them off

You

Tucked in each cell

Its own map

Not to be lost

You

Birthed me a new role

Mom, the one I love

Most

You

Kept me up at night

To scheme, to sift, and to sort

You were not mine

You

A gift on loan

Too short for me

But what do you say?

You

Spots still too hot to the touch

To own where I may have blown it all up

Still you back me up

You

To say that which I blew far and wide

Housed gold in it too

A both/and

You

To take full on that which owned and stole your skin

Yet not your soul

It was not for sale

You

Not too late for us

Might be with flesh and bones

Show me a new way

You

I will do just that

I hear, take my hand

So I do

You and Me

Hand in hand

Heart to heart

From this day on

You and Me

Could our work be done as it was?

You, to shed an earth skin too tight to take flight

Me, to shed my shame

You and Me

A team

To teach, to learn

Love just as we are

You and Me

All there was and is

Love in all its forms

This one is for keeps

Douglas and Jordan, the two tenders of the fire.

In January of this year, I taught my first creative writing class through Beyond: The Heart-Centered Writing Intensive. (This is from the very talented and creative spark, Jane Ratcliffe.)

Quite a few writers used the prompt: “write whatever your heart desires, using only one-syllable words.” I learned this wonderful prompt from the even more wonderful Victoria Redel!

I gave it a go with the writing of this piece.  Such an amazing practice for my gray matter to only use one-syllable words. Thank you to Jane and Victoria for this inspired exercise.

What an amazing result from your fascinating challenge...one-syallable words, I may give it a go.

Stand-out lines Joanie...

Ooooooh, that's so beautiful, Joanie. I love what the one-syllables stirred in your beautiful heart and soul. And the repetion of You is so potent. I think that will be thumping in my veins for quite a while. Douglas, Jordan, Brandi, and you are all gorgeous! Love this:

You are so kind, Melissa. Thank you. I still recall so many of my favorite outfits, and by this time of the pregnancy, much was no longer fitting. 😉

Oh Joanie, what a glorious glowing pregnant mama. Don't we remember every second of that time? And Douglas looking like a young Brad Pitt xx One day I will be a student at your creative writing class xxx

I adore that you see Brad Pitt. We do too! Occasionally in restaurants he received some double takes. 😉Such an honor and blessing to have our wonderful sons, Sanjay and Douglas in our 💞 hearts forever. Xo
